TREK TO THE HOLY LAND OF PEMAKO

Namche Barwa Range

PEMAKO: highlight

For nearly 2000 years the nation of an earthly paradise or Shangri-La hidden amoung the peaks of Asia has captivated the human imagination. Western explorers eombed the region in search of this land of bliss and nectar described in ancient Buddhist texts as the Pemako or the Lotus land.

According to Biddhist tradition Pemako is one of the 16th earthly paradise, a promised land free of worry, the ultimate hidden haven. The place is where, it is prophesied that the seed of humanity will thrive at the end of the world in famine and calamities.
In the beginning of the 20th century many Khampas from Tibet made a long, ardous trek to Pemako in quest of succour and refuge. They are one of the major inhabitants of the region, along with The Adis, The Mishmis who were the original inhabitants here. The region is a melting pot of different tribal cultures, where all the tribes exist in complete harmony amoung themselves and the nature. Walking through Pemako one can see Adi, Memba, Khampa and Mishmi villages with their distinctive culture, faith and lifestyle.
The Pemako is consecrated to female divinity of Dorje Phagmo and its sacred geography is mapped to the body of this sleeping goddess. Her head is the Kangri Kangpo, her two breasts is Namche Barwa and Gyala Peri respectively. The lower part of her body lies in Yangsang or the innermost Pemako which is the upper Siang region of Arunachal Pradesh. In the confluence of Siang (Tsangpo) and Yangsang is the sacred tringle Kila Yangzom the vulva of Goddess Dorje Phagmo. This the supreme of scared lands is now open to the world to discover and marvel.
Every year pilgrims traverse the area on Kora (circumbulation). Coverung the scared Devakota, the gathering place of Dakinis, The holy Titapori mountain, Penashree and Tiru Tala (Eko Dumbing for Adis).
After ardous trekking of 4 days one reaches the scared Titapori mountain at 14000 ft. The landscapes here forms a fully opened lotus. In the lake of Danakosha there is the Citta Island, ‘ heart of the world’. According to ancient Pemako guide book; upon merely seeing this place ones a thousand eons will be purified.
From here one have breath taking view of the majestic Himalaya range with Namche Barwa peak and Kondu Dosem Potrang the mythical palace of Dorje Shampa in the north, the Pemashree and Eko Dimbing or Riu Tala of the Abroka range towards west and south respectively.
It is a treasure trove of flora and fauna with all kinds of medicinal and aromatic plants and rare flowers. It is also a Rhodendron fairyland. 44 new species was discovered here in 2005. Wildlife includes: Goral, Takin, musk derr, Snow Leopard, Tiger etc.
The Adi hunters come to the high mountains in annual expedition to collect aconite poison and offer their prayer and homage to the deities of the mountain.
The region offers very challenging trekking opportunities for pilgrims, plant enthusiasts and birding.
Best periond to visit is from August to October.     

ITINERARY

Day 1 Delhi - Gauhati. Helicopter to Itanagar.
From Delhi 1010 1340 arr Gauhati.
Upon arrival at Gauhati airport, we will take the connecting Helicopter to Itanagar,
the capital of Arunachal Pradesh.
The helicopter ride is over the plains of the state of Assam till we approach the hills of Arunachal Pradesh.

Dep: 1330 Arr: 1430

Assistance upon arrival and drive to your hotel.
We will visit the Ita Fort, from where the name Itanagar is derived. The real reason of building the fort is not known but it is assumed that it was built to guard the town from outside invaders. We will also visit the Buddhist Gompa located in the town.

Rest of the time at leisure. Dinner and overnight at Oken's bunglow.

Day 2 : Itanagar - Pasighat (07 hours 155 m)
After breakfast depart for Pashighat. Our journey takes us through numerous Assamese villages and tropical landscape of Assam before we touch the hilly side of Arunachal Pradesh. If the time permits we will visit some villages on the way.
Overnight at Siang Guest House or Hotel Oman.

Day 3 : Pasighat - Jengging (07 hours 2690 ft)
Today our drive is on the rough road along the Siang river to Jengging. Enroute we will visit the Adi Minyong village which is still very well preserved and one of the most authentic one of this tribe.
We will also walk on the traditional cane and bamboo suspension bridge which is still used .
Overnight at the Circuit House

Day 4 : Jengging - Tuting (08 hours 1493 ft)
After breakfast we will take the rough but scenic drive to Tuting, the last motorable Indian town base of our trekking. Overnight at the Circuit House.

Day 5 : Tuting - Nyukong (06 hours) 4109 ft)Today we will start our trek on the sub tropical forest area with a gradual climb initially and a steep climb for an hour before we reach the village of Nyukong belonging to Memba tribe. The Membas originanally from eastern Bhutan who ventured out in search of this Holy Land. Their search took them to Tibet
Day 6 : Nyukong - Dewa Kota TREK
(07 hours 3617 ft)
Dewa Kota is a river island with the Yangsang river circling it like a horse shoe. This is one of the most important Holy Sites in the region. We will stay in the monastery here. Moderate walking with one uphill climb.

 

 

    DEWA KOTA (Holy Sites)  

Day 7:Dewa Kota/Payengdam TREK (05 hours) 4017 ft This region is inhabited by Khampa tribal people originally from the Kham region in Tibet who came here in search of promise land of Pemako. Early morning circumbulation and prayers around the island.

Payengdam is perched on the hilltop which offers excellent view of Namche Barwa range on the clear day . Moderate walking with gradual climbs. Campfire and Cultural programme with villagers in the evening.

Day 8 : Payengdam - Tuting TREK
(06 hours 1493 ft)
After a leisurely breakfast, we will trek back to Tuting, passing through tribal villages of Nyering village of Adi tribe.
Moderate walking.

Day 9 : Tuting: Excursion to Kilayangjome TREK

Today we will do the excusion trek to Kilayangjome, the confluence of River Tsangpo (Siang) and River Yangsang. The triangle confluence is known as the vulva of the Godneess Dorje Phagmo, the consort of Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava). After our visit we will return back to Tuting for dinner and overnight stay.
Today our trek to the Holy Land ends.

Day 10 : Tuting-Jenging
(08 hours 1493 ft)
After breakfast drive back to Jengging. Overnight at the circuit House.

Day 11 : Jenging- Pasighat
(07 hours 2690 ft)
After breakfast drive back to Pasighat. Overnight at the circuit House.

Day 12 : Pasighat- Dibrugarh
After early breakfast we will depart for the Ghats (shore) to take the ferry ride across Brahmaputra to reach Dibrugarh. The leisurely cruise for 05 - 06 hours along the river gives an insight to the visitors on how the fishermen families live in Assam.

Day 13 : Dibrugharh-Delhi
Transfer to the airport for the flight to Delhi.

Day 14 : Delhi-onward journey
Transfer to the airport for the flight to onward journey.
